What are the benefits of SD-WAN?

What is SD-WAN?

Software-Defined WAN (SD-WAN) is a software-based routing solution that automatically distributes network traffic across multiple WAN connections based on policies you define.

What are the benefits of SD-WAN?

  • Improved quality of service

A traditional networking solution like MPLS or Ethernet WAN follows strict configuration which prevents it using circuits intelligently.  Only one application can use each circuit for example.  If one circuit is congested packets are dropped and the performance drops.  SD-Wan will happily allow for both circuits to be used actively and will monitor all available bandwidth and capacity to ensure best performance.

  • Lower costs and increased security

MPLS was developed in the 1990’s, but it is expensive. A fully virtualised SD-WAN removes the physical networking costs and offers better security and performance.

  • Lower provisioning costs

SD-Wan enables rapid deployment of bandwidth and firewall WAN services as their configurations are simpler than those for traditional WAN.

  • Improved application performance for remote workers

SD-WAN has zero-touch provisioning which allows a network admin to pre-configure device profiles for remote and branch locations. It allows remote employees be set up in minutes with no admin involvement.

How does this benefit your telecoms?

If you are on a VoIP call SD-WAN will automatically prioritise it safeguarding call and UCaaS services.  Should something go wrong with a connection on one-line SD-WAN can move between multiple connections automatically which ensures call quality and uptime.

Another example is with 5G.  With the huge speed boosts, it promises there will be a shift on how mobile networks are used within business.  It will significantly complicate the network landscape, but SD-WAN should ease the management burden as it is agnostic to the connections being used and application aware.  This will potentially allow for 5G connectivity to be treated as a traditional network link allowing for rapid deployment.

WatchGuard

Connexis is also a WatchGuard partner and SD-WAN is embedded into their fireboxes.  The WatchGuard Firebox monitors your WAN connections and should a connection become congested it will send traffic over an alternative connection
