Voice over Internet Protocol
Simply put, IP telephony enables voice communications over internet protocol (IP) networks. Enabling organisations to merge locations and workers (including remote and mobile staff) into one, seamless converged network. The more obvious advantages include the ability for businesses to maintain a single, uniform and centrally based system, allowing for effective management and monitoring of usage, cost and billing, as well as eliminating the incurred cost of internal calls.
How it works
IP telephony works by converting voice communications into data packets for transmission over data networks, rather than the traditional direct route through a telephone line. Instead, phones are connected to the data ports of the IP network, which then replicates the telephony functions via a PC.
The concept of exploiting data networks to handle voice calls has taken hold rapidly in recent years, partly due to the additional features this technology provides, and partly the availability of existing equipment and the opportunity to cut the cost of internal communications.
