Computer Telephony Integration
What is Computer Telephony Integration?
It is a means of combining your computers and telephones, to handle all your voice, fax, and data traffic.
How does CTI work?
You can run a basic CTI solution on your PC, or small network of PCs, without the need to invest in specialist equipment. This will involve some minor modifications to your computer, and installing a soft phone program, such as Phone Manager.
Or you could use a server or phone hub to do it. This is like an extra computer which controls the network, and can distribute calls to the various computers / telephones on the network.
What difference could it make to my business?
It can improve your customer service, making you more responsive to your customers' needs and making your service more personalised. It can help reduce costs by using fewer phone lines and the lowest cost carriers, and increase your efficiency. Find out more in the Benefits section.
How much is it likely to cost?
This will vary greatly, depending on the solution you choose and the systems you already have in place. It can range from £250 for a one-person solution to around £6,000 for a ten-person solution.
How can I introduce Computer Telephony Integration to my business?
Before sourcing a Computer Telephony Integration solution, it's worth making a wish list of what you want your system to do. Include all the essential features that the system must have - such as call handling, caller id, outbound call logging etc, and also all the features you would like to have if practical and affordable - such as SMS text messaging, support for web-based text chat, etc.
How easy is it to set up CTI?
This will depend on the complexity of the system. If you have just a few PCs in a simple network, and a simple phone system too, CTI can be easy to introduce.
Is CTI appropriate for small business?
The size of the business is not the governing factor here - but the amount of telephone traffic involved. If much of the work of the business involves telephone communication with customers, prospects, suppliers, or remote staff then CTI can certainly pay dividends.
